Viking legend states warriors who had met honorable deaths were marked out by the Valknut tattoo and spirited away by the Valkyries to Valhalla to join Odins mighty army. A solid whisky I fully recommend if you can get it for around £30 which, as it’s an Amazon exclusive (at least here in the UK) should be fairly often. Shop Highland Park Valknut at the best prices. The buttery feel of it is what wins me over as I’m a big fan of that, especially when mixed with peat. I certainly put it above the 12yr and the Dragon Legend. Overall: This is a very tasty whisky for the price. Not quite worth £40, but absolutely worth £29. Value: I got it for £29 on offer against a supposed RRP of around £40. Water doesn’t change the finish much at all. The pepper is subdued but still hits fairly hard, however without that buttery feel it adds a burn that I’m not too fond of.įinish: Fairly long and very peppery, smoke wafts in and out along with a hint of spice. With water it’s quite a bit thinner and the floral notes come through as dominant but with less peat. Maturation: Distilled November 2007, bottled April 2021 at 13 years old. Really nice, especially after a couple of drams. The last Duncan Taylor Highland Park I tried was a rather terrible Battlehill, so I hope this is an improvement. Palate: The thickest end of medium, it’s beautifully buttery with hints of orange zest and honey at first, followed by a huge black pepper hit mixed with that floral/heathery peat. Vanilla comes in to support and it ends up being rather a summery nose. That is countered by a freshness borne of floral notes. Butter and brown sugar come through straight away followed by heathery peat and a touch of salt.Ī dash of water thins it out a tad but it remains fairly thick. So I thought for the price I would give this a go. Redbreast 12 Cask Strength is hard to beat, but the Spot (Green, Yellow, Red, Blue) are all excellent as well. I’m not really into the whole Viking branding (and I hate the bottle being so dark you can’t see how much is left without holding it up to a flashlight) but I enjoyed the Dragon Legend and I’ve tried either the Valkyrie or Valknut, can’t remember which but I liked that as well. If you like Oban 14, maybe try another scotch with mild peat like Highland Park, or branch into Campbeltown whiskies like Springbank or Kilkerran. However I’ve tried some of their older stuff and been impressed (I had an 18yr SMWS dram recently and it was lovely). And I’ve only had one dram of the 10yr Viking something or other but it’s not good. I’m not a fan of the 12yr - the UK version is 40% which based on comments I got from people who live in other countries when I reviewed it, makes a big difference.
